March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month

March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month – an opportunity to show allyship for people in the disabled community. It’s also an opportunity to share how proud we are to support Smile Farms, our signature philanthropic partner.

The mission of Smile Farms is to create meaningful work opportunities for people with disabilities in agriculture and hospitality. Their work generates purpose and pride, enhances life skills, and fosters socialization.

Smile Farms was founded in 2015 by the McCann family, in collaboration with Independent Group Home Living. From a single greenhouse, the organization has grown into a federally recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit with 11 campuses.

Three years ago, we launched our first year-round fundraising collection for Smile Farms, which to date has raised nearly $140,000 for this amazing nonprofit.

This year, the Smile Farms Collection features an expanded assortment of everyday gifting products, including the charity’s own Heat with Heart™ hot sauce, made with peppers grown by Smile Farmers working across several locations in the New York area.

The Connections Committee is encouraging everyone to support Smile Farms this month in several ways:

• Take a moment to share the Smile Farms Collection link with family and friends – or do some shopping yourself!
• Follow Smile Farms on social media. You can find them at @smilefarmsinc on Facebook and Instagram.
• Nominate Smile Farms for the 2023 Best of Nassau County Contest! Search under Services – Best Not-For-Profit to nominate Smile Farms before March 3. Then return on March 31 to cast your vote!

Smile Farms is working every day to shape a better future where people with special needs are valued for the real contributions they make in their workplaces and communities. The marketing team is planning a year-long awareness campaign to keep our fundraising collection top of mind for shoppers. Additionally, the 1-800-Flowers.com® Gifts & More marketplace is featuring a special DDAM collection with products created by makers with developmental disabilities. During the month of March, 1-800-FLOWERS.COM, Inc. will donate 20% of net proceeds from each gift purchased from this marketplace collection to Smile Farms.
