Smile Farms At The Viscardi Center

June 16, 2017
I never thought that I would actually enjoy gardening until today!  Working alongside the wonderful students of The Viscardi Center and the knowledgeable volunteers from Hick’s Nurseries made the work fun.  Their growing operation is very unique in many ways but what distinguishes it from most other locations is that they will not be using dirt to grow their vegetables.

Instead of using traditional growing methods, they will be growing their produce hydroponically, which is more efficient and much cleaner.  Rather than digging through dirt we were digging into pots filled with perlite which made the process a lot easier for everyone.  This method helps the plants grow quicker, which means that The Viscardi Center will be able to enjoy their harvest of tomatoes and cucumbers sooner than I will at home!

The students worked confidently and when complimented on their work I could see their faces light up. Some would even respond by acknowledging their own good work, which showed me just how much pride they will have in caring for this garden.  I cannot wait to follow up and maybe even enjoy some of their delicious tomatoes and cucumbers over a salad with the students.
