September 29, 2016Emeralds Get to Work for National Disability Employment Awareness Month
October 18, 2016October Is National Disability Employment Awareness Month
October is time to reflect on the important role diversity has played in the work force, and will continue to play for years to come. National Disability Employment Awareness Month is a time to celebrate the impact of workers with varying abilities and recognize that all workers can add tremendous value. This history of this month dates back to August 11, 1945 when President Harry S. Truman approved a Congressional resolution declaring the first week in October “National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week.” In 1962, the word “physically” was removed to acknowledge the employment needs and contributions of individuals with all types of disabilities. Throughout the decades this week has evolved into an entire month and each year this month has more and more people rallying around the movement. Smile Farms is delighted to see how National Disability Employment Awareness Month is bringing so much attention to the well deserving cause.
